A wave of attacks on women in Italy has prompted calls for harsh measures against suspected rapists. Three women have been raped in the past few days, including a teenager in Rome’s Caffarello Park. Immigrant Roma gypsies have been blamed, with some politicians demanding extreme punishment. Writing in today’s La Stampa, Northern League minister Roberto Calderoli said rapists should be surgically castrated to protect women from attack.
Immigrants, especially the Roma, have been linked with much of Italy’s rising crime rate. Many of their camps have been raided by police, amid calls for them to be deported. More controversially, there have been proposals to authorise unarmed civilian militia groups to patrol potential attack sites. Italy’s left-wing opposition deplored the idea, saying it would only increase the risk of violence.
