Netanyahu claims electoral win

With Israel’s election producing the tightest of results, both leaders of the country’s two main parties are claiming victory.

Addressing supporters at a post-election rally, Likud party Chief Benjamin Netanyahu said: ‘‘I will turn first to our natural partners on the right wing as I promised and I’ve already spoken with the head of the factions and we’ve decided to start discussions tomorrow to form an new Israeli government.” Likud’s lead in the pre-election polls narrowed dramatically in the final few days building up to the election. But with 27 seats, together with a good showing for his right-wing rivals, Netanyahu now appears to be in the driving seat to form Israel’s next government.
