Hundreds of former residents of the Melbourne suburb of Kingslake have gathered at refugee shelters that have hurriedly been set up to look after them.

Although the Australian government is offering millions of dollars in aid to stricken families, it may never be enough; many people’s losses will take far more than money to replace. Everyone was stunned at the speed at which the fire spread, and the size of the sometimes four-storey-high flames. Lists of volunteers, and families willing to take in the homeless are being drawn up and food is being organised for those tired and stressed-out survivors who have made it to aid centres.
