Germany`s 59th Berlinale film festival has opened with a slew of world stars stepping out on the red carpet.
Kate Winslett was promoting her new movie The Reader along with Ralph Finnes. The film is a haunting story about truth and reconciliation in Nazi Germany and how one generation comes to terms with the crimes of another. The cast of the Danish movie Little Soldier also faced the flashbulbs. The film is one of eighteen vying for the prestigious Golden Bear. It tells the tale of a female soldier who returns to Denmark both mentally and physically scarred by her experiences. Berlinale was the venue for the Gala screening of a new French movie Ricky directed by Francois Ozon. It is described as one of several feel good movies designed to make us forget economic woes. The Berlinale ranks as one of the world’s top three film festivals alongside Cannes in May and Venice in September. As the first major film festival since the financial crisis began, Berlin is seen as a bellwether of the industry’s health in 2009.
