France and the US say they are stepping up the pressure to try to get foreign aid into Gaza. The French Foreign Minister, Bernard Kouchner, has met his US counterpart in Washington, vowing to work closely together to achieve peace in the Middle East.
He said: “We are really very anxious about the situation, about the people in Gaza. And we were in agreement, together with Madam Secretary of State to make [sic] pressure on both sides to open the crossing. The Gaza people, they need so called humanitarian assistance.”
Britain has also urged Israel to give full access for humanitarian supplies and medicine, days after the EU complained that entry of goods was being blocked by Israel. Meanwhile, the Israeli Navy has boarded a freighter trying to break the blockade and escorted it to the Port of Ashod. The military says 20 passengers on board are now being questioned.
