Hillary Clinton is due to meet the British and German foreign ministers today, after being officially sworn in as US Secretary of State by Vice-President Joe Biden. Top of the agenda will be Iran and Afghanistan, ahead of a meeting of senior diplomats in Germany tomorrow.
Clinton’s first overseas trip is expected to be to Asia. “We are all on the same team and it is America’s team, and we have in the leadership of President Obama someone who wants us to reach out to the world, to do so without illusions,” she said at the swearing-in ceremony. “I get up every morning thinking about what I must do to make this world of ours safer and more prosperous and to make our country all that it can be.” The White House is expected to confirm career diplomat Chris Hill as US ambassador to Iraq. Withdrawing from Iraq is one of Obama’s key foreign policy goals, along with resolving the North Korean and Iranian nuclear issues.
