Israel bombs Gaza as rockets fall in southern Israel

Israeli aircraft destroyed a car in the southern Gazan town of Rafah killing one Palestinian and wounding three others.

Israel claims it targeted a squad that had fired two mortar bombs into southern Israel. Medical officials say they were members of the Popular Resistance Committees. Despite the ceasefire Israel launched a series of air strikes in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, hitting a Hamas security complex and tunnels used to smuggle weapons after vowing a “disproportionate” response to Hamas rocket attacks. The aircraft carried out a number of bombing raids after three Israelis, including two soldiers, were injured in a mortar salvo. The Israeli air force bombed tunnels along Gaza’s border with Egypt in an area known as the Philadelphi corridor. A Hamas security outpost was also hit, but residents say the building had been vacated before the planes arrived.
