Israel strikes again at Gazan tunnels into Egypt

Violence has continued to flare up around the Gaza Strip, casting the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas into further doubt.

Overnight, Israeli aircraft once more bombed an area of tunnels on the border with Egypt, after a rocket was fired into Israel by militants. An Israeli soldier was killed earlier in the week in a bomb blast. One Palestinian was killed and several others were injured in retaliatory air strikes. All this comes as US peace envoy George Mitchell continues his whistlestop tour of the Middle East. After talks with senior Israeli politicians yesterday, he is set to head for Ramallah for a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana is also on a tour of the region and was in Ramallah yeterday. Abbas hit out at Israel after the meeting, saying its latest actions were deepening Palestinian divisions and making the possibility of a two state solution harder to achieve.
