Belgium searches for answers behind creche attack

Belgium continues to take in the shocking knife attack at a nursery, in which two babies and a woman were killed.

Magistrates have charged a 20-year-old man with murder and attempted murder. A dozen other people were wounded in the rampage at the creche in Dendermonde, west of Brussels. The incident occurred on Friday morning after the attacker tricked his way into the nursery, going on a knife wielding rampage before cycling away. Prosecutors have identified the man they are holding simply as Kim D. But the reasons behind the frenzied attack remain unclear. Some have drawn links to the Joker in Batman, knowing the knifeman’s face was painted white with blackened eyes. ‘‘Nobody knows anything, as I explained – neither his motive nor why he came specifically to this creche. He doesn’t even live round there,’‘ said prosecutor Christian Du Four. Magistrates said the prime suspect is unemployed and lives alone some 30km from where Friday’s attack took place.
