Storm kills Spanish children

At least seven people, three of them children, have been killed by a storm in Spain.

The youngsters died when the roof of a sports centre near Barcelona collapsed. It is believed they were aged between 9 and 12. Local people fought desperately to rescue the victims from the rubble. “I saw 8 to 10 kids buried there,” said one witness. “The police had not arrived yet so me and other people from the area started digging. We got five or six out, all of them were pulled out.” Some 16 other children were injured in the incident. They were among 30 who had been playing baseball outside the gym but went inside for shelter. In another incident in the same city a woman was fatally injured after a wall fell on her in high winds. On the other side of the country, in the Galicia region, a policeman was killed when his car was struck by a falling tree.
