With Belgium still reeling from Friday’s fatal knife attack at a nursery, a man has been charged in connection with the killings.
Two children and a female employee died in the rampage. A dozen other people were injured. Dendermonde, some 30 kilometres west of the capital Brussels, remains in shock. “We thought that things like this only happened in the United States and now we see that in Belgium, in a small village like this where everybody knows each other, such a thing could happen.” said one resident. “It is very, very bad.” Today’s headlines reflect the horror of the attack in which a knifeman with a white painted face and blackened eyes ran amok in the nursery after tricking his way in. A man was arrested soon afterwards. He has been charged with murder and attempted murder. On Sunday,a march will be held in memory of the victims. For many Belgians struggling to come to terms with the attack the question then, as now, will simply be “why?”
