The French justice minister who returned to work five days after giving birth, is to run for a seat as an MEP after a shake-up of the ruling UMP party. Rachida Dati will now run for a Parisian seat in the European Parliamentary elections in June. The move follows the appointment of Labour Minister Xavier Bertrand, who also relinquishes his cabinet post, as Secretary General of the UMP. “This is an example for our political movement that Xavier Bertrand has been enthusiastic to the idea of being Secretary General of our political family. This has to serve as an example to everybody, before you ask something of your political party you must also be able to give,” he said. Michel Barnier will be number one on the list of candidates in the Parisian region with Rachida Dati as number two which means she is likely to be elected. Xavier Bertrand, who stands down as Labour Minister, has been tasked with modernising the UMP. He has promised to turn it into as popular movement making it 100 per cent “useful” to the French people.
