Belgium is beginning to take in the grim news that at least two infants and a woman have been knifed to death after an attacker burst into a creche.
The country’s Crown Prince Philipe and Princess Mathilde visited the day care centre to show their support. The incident occurred on Friday morning when a man with a white painted face and blackened eyes tricked his way into the playgroup in the small town of Dendermonde, some 30 kilometres northwest of Brussels. On entering, police say he ran amok, stabbing at will before escaping on a bike. Eleven other children and two female staff wounded in the incident were taken to local hospitals. Three youngsters are said to be in a critical condition. Authorities say a 20-year-old man from the region was later arrested in a nearby shop around 90 minutes after the attack. Officials say the man was not a psychiatric patient, nor under the influence of drugs or alcohol, which had earlier been reported in some sections of the Belgian media.
