New photos prove Castro is alive

Cuba’s PR machine has swung into action to scotch rumours that Fidel Castro has died, or is seriously ill. New pictures, with Argentina’s President Cristina Fernandez, show that Castro was well enough to receive guests on Wednesday at least.

Castro’s health has been discussed and debated since he suffered health problems and retreated from public view in 2006. Since then he has been seen in occasional videos and photos, but the last time a picture was released was in November when China’s President Hu Jintao paid a visit. Castro handed over power to younger brother Raul a year ago, contenting himself with occasional musings posted on the internet. This week Castro praised Barack Obama as an intelligent and honest man, but said he may not live to see the end of Obama’s presidency.More about: Cuba, Fidel Castro
