Two sentenced to death for China milk scandal

The former head of the Chinese baby milk company at the centre of a poisoning scandal has been jailed for life for the affair, which saw at least six children die, and 300,000 more fall ill. Two other defendants were sentenced to death; other suspects have also been jailed; executives, businessmen and officials remain on trial.

The scandal saw baby milk tainted with melamine, used to make plastics, but which can help cheat nutrition tests. The Sanlu dairy group and city officials in Shijiazhuang are accused of failing to report the vast numbers of children who suffered kidney disease months before the affair became public in September. It is alleged that Chinese officials tried to keep the affair under wraps, so as not to ruin the run-up to last summer’s Olympics in Beijing.
