Appearing frail but fine, Senator Ted Kennedy gave no indication that he was feeling anything but elation yesterday morning as he arrived to witness Barack Obama’s swearing-in.
Yet just hours later the veteran Democrat collapsed during a lunch for Obama in the Capitol. The incident happened at the end of the meal. Kennedy was sitting on the same table as former Vice President Walter Mondale. It is not clear if President Obama saw what was happening because of the crowd. Emergency teams were called to the scene and Kennedy, who was described by eyewitnesses as having had some kind of seizure, was taken to hospital. He is now conscious and having tests. The 76-year-old had major surgery after a similar seizure last June to remove a malignant brain tumour. Doctors said the operation was a success and predicted that Kennedy would suffer no permanent damage from the procedure.
