Obama: the world was watching


Not everyone could be in Washington to watch the inauguration of Barak Obama, millions viewed the historic moment on TV screens all over the world

In Berlin members of Democrats Abroad said they were glad to see the end of 8 years of a Bush administration. Donald Gibson said: ‘It’s so hard to describe, it’s unbelievable. it’s the end of 8 years of nightmare.’ In France, at Paris City Hall there was much emotion as a new Democartic era began at the White House Their dreams had suddenly come true. In Rome too Italian who support the Democrats applauded the inaugaration of America’s forty fourth President. Madrid rolled out the big screens in bars and restaurants as events unfurled on the other side of the Atlantic. Meanwhile in the Middle East where Gazans have just endured three weeks of Israeli bombardment the electricity lasted just long enough for Palestinians to watch and wonder just how the new President will impact on theirt lives. It was the same story in Israel a nation at the heart of a conflict which is going to take up much of President Obama’s time.
