Truce offers return to 'normality' for wary Israelis

For Israelis living within the range of Hamas rocket fire the week-long truce offers a return to normality. There was not the same scale of destruction in southern Israeli cities as in Gaza, but people here lived under the constant threat of attack.

Three Israeli civilians died in rocket strikes, adding to the ten soldiers killed in the past three weeks. One woman in Ashkelon said: “Today, I feel a little bit better but I’m still afraid to live in Ashkelon.” Some are worried that Hamas might simple use the ceasefire to regroup and rearm. One woman lamented the offensive did not free captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. “It’s a deceptive calm,” she said. As commercial life resumes it is back to school for children. Lessons were cancelled in Sderot and other areas more than three weeks ago.
