Russia and Ukraine have signed a 10-year deal to renew supplies of Russian gas to Ukraine and Europe.
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said at the signing ceremony he expects full gas flows to resume through Ukraine to Europe in the near future. Putin also said intermediaries would be removed from gas trade with Ukraine; “The Russian group Gazprom has been ordered to resume gas deliveries to Europe via Ukraine”. Ukraine will get a 20 percent discount on prices charged to western consumers this year under the new deal. Cutting the middlemen out of the equation may be a sign both parties are to end corrupt practices that allegedly have dogged the industry for years. The EU’s immediate response to the deal, via the European Commission, was to ask for details on the precise time supplies would resume.
