After twenty one days of Israeli bombardments, pressure on Palestinian medical staff and facilities is mounting. Doctors in Gaza City point to the use of shells containing white phosphorous.
“ We strongly believe than non conventional weapons have been utilised,” said one medic. “There is abundant evidence that white phosphorous has been used in addition to the so-called dime bomb,” he said. Various human rights organisations have accused Israel of using the banned shells but its military claims that it only uses munitions in accordance with international law. Earlier people were forced to flee as yet another hospital was hit. Israel says that Palestinian Hamas fighters are using civilians as human shields. Israeli television has been broadcasting reports from Gaza – one Hebrew speaking Palestinian doctor was being interviewed when his home was fired on. His desperate cries for help after three of his children were killed prompted the Israeli authorities to evacuate the rest of his surviving family through the Erez crossing, to a nearby Israeli hospital. An army spokesman claimed soldiers had been responding to Hamas sniper fire.
