Gaza ceasefire close as Israel studies Hamas offer

There is fresh hope that Israel’s offensive in Gaza could be coming to an end.

As diplomatic efforts to broker a ceasefire gather pace Israel says its campaign could be “in the final act.” There has been a relative lull after yesterday’s intense fighting that many had seen as Israel’s final bid to kill off any military threat from Hamas. For the first time in weeks, Israel says no rockets have been fired from Gaza. However, the extent of Israeli bombing over the last 48 hours is all too apparent. A hospital was among 40 targets struck by Israeli aircraft. A UN storage depot was also caught in the line of fire, drawing condemnation from the UN’s secretary general. At least fifteen Palestinians were killed yesterday bringing the death toll to over 1100. Among the dead, Hamas’s Interior Minister Saeed Seyyam, whose funeral took place this morning.
