Just a week before his inauguration as US President, Barack Obama is firming up some key policies.
After meeting the Mexican President, and promising to strengthen their ties, Obama spoke about the financial crisis. He says he has requested access to the remaining 350 billion of the 700 billion dollar economic bailout package. “I think many of us have been disappointed with the absence of clarity, the lack of transparency, the failure to track how the money has been spent,” he said. “So my commitment is that we are going to fundamentally change some of the practices in using this next phase of the programme.” Obama’s team has also said the new president will issue an executive order to close the controversial prison at the US naval base at Guantanamo Bay. They say this will more than likely happen in his first week in office, but the actual closure of the prison will take some time.
