Calls for an end to the fighting in Gaza are growing. Thousands descended on London’s Trafalgar Square urging Israel and the Palestinians to live in peace.
The mainly-pro-Israel demonstrators denounced the killing in Gaza, but said the Palestinians must accept responsibility for firing rockets into southern Israel. The rally was mainly good-natured but there were some brief scuffles as pro-Palestinian protestors clashed with police. It followed the publication of an open letter from prominent British Jews calling on Israel to end its campaign in Gaza. The writers said that, far from improving Israel’s security, military action would strengthen extremism and provoke more terrorist attacks in the Middle East.
