Rockets fired into Israel from Southern Lebanon have raised fears the conflict in Gaza could widen.
But, initial fears Lebanon’s Hizbollah group were behind the attack have been played down after Israel pointed the finger at Palestinian militants. At least 3 rockets hit the Israeli town of Nahiriya, with one hitting a nursing home. Israel’s army hit back with artillery in what officials say was a pinpoint response. Two people from the nursing home were slightly wounded in the attack with other residents being treated for shock. The Lebanese government has criticised the attack, saying it violated a UN Security Council resolution halting the 2006 war between Hizbollah and Israel. The UN says it has taken immediate measures to reinforce southern Lebanon in an attempt to prevent further incidents. The UN mission has peacekeeping troops on the border between Israel and southern Lebanon as part of a ceasefire brokered in 2006
