A winter storm has covered huge swathes of Europe in a blanket of snow. In Poland one person has been found frozen to death and a number injured in car accidents. In Germany, heavy snowfall blocked roads and caused traffic chaos. Dusseldorf airport closed for three hours in the morning and flights out of Frankfurt suffered delays. While in France the authorities issued traffic alerts in 30 regions because of icy roads.
The Eiffel Tower, one of the world’s top tourist attractions, had to be closed because of the conditions. The Belgian capital Brussels was hit by snow and hail causing the main axis roads close to the capital to snarl up. Britain is in the middle of its longest cold snap in more than a decade and it looks set to last well into the weekend. Snow has fallen over many parts of the country.
