Israel has said it is doing all it can to avoid civilian casualities in what is one of the most densely populated parts of the world, but around a quarter of the more than 520 Palestinians killed so far have been civilians.
Among the lastest victims were three children whose house in Gaza City was hit by a tank shell, according to Palestinian medics.
So far the offensive has failed to completely prevent Hamas from firing rockets at Israel. Four Israelis have been killed in recent attacks.
