Reaction among ordinary people has been much stronger. Demonstrators took to the streets across the world, some supporting Israel, most venting their anger. In Athens, as in many other places, that anger spilled over into violent clashes.
In Paris, too, criticism of Israel boiled over as protestors rampaged through the 8th arrondissement close to the Israeli embassy. But security was tight, and police managed to impose control as night fell. One of the biggest protests came in London, where more than 10,000 people marched to Trafalgar Square before heading to the Israeli mission. Britain has called for a ceasefire, but the protestors demanded stronger government criticism of Israel.
