Demonstrations against the Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip have continued in major cities throughout Europe. In London, up to 12,000 people marched to show their disapproval. The musician Annie Lennox was one recognisable face in the crowd, adding her voice to the calls for Israel to stop its bombardments.
As they marched from the River Thames towards Trafalgar Square some protestors threw shoes at the gates of Downing Street, giving the Prime Minister Gordon Brown the same angry gesture which met President Bush in Baghdad recently. In Germany, several cities saw demonstrations. Police in Dusseldorf said 4,000 marched there. At least 1500 turned out in Amsterdam, and in Madrid, more than a thousand people marched after a rally outside the Spanish Foreign ministry.
