Sri Lanka says its troops have fought their way into the Tamil Tigers’ de facto capital of Kilinochchi and that it will soon be under government control.
The noose is tightening on the Tamil Tigers after the Sri Lankan government vowed to end their 25-year separatist war. Military analysts say the fall of Kilinochchi will be a bitter blow for the Tamil Tigers as it is the site of the organisation’s political and administrative activities. The loss of the town means Mullaitivu in the northeast remains the only Tamil Tiger stronghold in the country. As many as 70,000 people have been listed as killed since the conflict began in 1983.
