Fireworks let off inside one of Bangkok’s most upscale nightclubs during a New Year’s Eve party may be to blame for a fire that killed more than 60 people.
Four Britons and several other foreigners are among the nearly 200 injured. Partygoers spoke of flames shooting from the front of the stage, explosions and a stampede for the door and windows. Those who had managed to escape sat slumped outside, in shock at how quickly the night out had turned to nightmare. Witnesses said revellers had been given sparklers just before midnight and fireworks were let off as the clock chimed. Local media said an electrical fault was probably to blame. A police investigation is underway. Dozens of bodies wrapped in sheets lay on the pavement outside. Forensic experts have been unable to identify at least 30 of them. The prime minister has visited the injured at one hospital. Bangkok’s nightspots have often been the subject of safety concerns although there had been no incidents for five years.
