Anxiety rises as rockets hit deeper inside Israel

With Hamas rocket attacks reaching further into Israel, anxiety is spreading to previously unaffected parts of the country.

In one overnight attack on Beersheba a device struck a school causing damage to classrooms. The building was empty and no one was injured, but the attack illustrated how devastating these weapons can be. Beersheba is some 40 kilometres from the border with Gaza. Recent strikes have targeted towns closer to the Strip, claiming four lives. Israeli President Shimon Perez has visited some of the communities affected. Some of the missiles are homemade, while others are factory-produced and smuggled into Gaza. Hamas has been deploying more powerful rockets by the day as part of a strategy to ratchet up the tension. Israelis are well drilled in how to act when the sirens sound, but often have just seconds to take refuge.
