Speculation rife about Israeli ground offensive

One of the big questions now is whether an Israeli ground offensive in Gaza is imminent. Speculation has been rising with reports of a build-up of soldiers and tanks along the border. Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak has confirmed that sending troops into Gaza is a possibility. “If the goals of the operation will not be achieved by airstrikes, we will have to consider boots on the ground,” he said.

The Israeli cabinet is remaining firm on its position, dismissing widespread criticism that its offensive is disproportionate. It says the military is trying to avoid what it calls “damage”. But it says Israel has to achieve its goal of stopping rocket attacks on Israeli civilians.
