Israel has kept up its bombing campaign in Gaza for a second day, with the death toll there now close to 300. Some 40 tunnels that run beneath the border with Egypt are the latest targets. Earlier on Sunday a mosque was hit, as Israel continues to retaliate against Palestinian rocket and mortar attacks into Israel.
While the Israeli government has said it has no plan to reoccupy the Gaza Strip, speculation is rife that a ground offensive in the territory is imminent. As well as those killed in Gaza, more than 700 Palestinians have been wounded, while one Israeli has died in a rocket strike. Israel has brushed aside international calls for restraint, including a UN Security Council appeal for an immediate halt of all violence. Hamas is vowing that the Palestinian response will include suicide bombings.
