European Parliament votes to end work opt-out

Text size Aa Aa

The European Parliament has put itself on a collision course with EU member states after it voted to stop allowing people to work more than 48 hours a week. MEPs voted 421 to 273 in favour of the core proposal to cap the working week.

Some 15 EU states, including Britain which has been arguing strongly to keep the provision, currently have an opt-out clause which permits people to work more than 48 hours if they want to. Last-ditch talks between Strasbourg and EU member states are now expected to begin over the European Working Directive, with the outcome uncertain.
