Former world chess champion Garry Kasparov has joined up with other Russian opposition groups to form a new political movement. More than 160 opponents of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin gathered to overwhelmingly vote for the creation of ‘Solidarity’.
Kasparov, who accuses current President Dmitry Medvedev of being a Putin puppet, called on the members to fight the Kremlin. ‘‘Our task today is the dismantling of the Putin regime as the only condition for restoring normal and free political competition in the country. Dismantling, not destruction. We do not want violence and our goal is to make this transition as painless as possible,’‘ Kasparov said.
Outside the assembly, pro-government supporters from the ‘Young Russia’ movement held a rally, accusing Kasparov and the opposition of rocking the boat at a time of national economic turmoil.
