Alleged cocaine boss extradited to US

A suspected Colombian drugs baron has been extradited to the US in what police are hailing as a fatal blow to one of Latin Americas biggest crime gangs. Diego Montoya was transferred to Miami from Colombia where he was arrested last year. He is facing charges including, drugs smuggling, money laundering and murdering a witness. Montoya had been on the FBI’s ten most wanted list.

Colombian police chief Oscar Naranjo said: “Colombia is closing a chapter on drug trafficking, closing a chapter on ending the Norte del Valle cartel. This extradition is probably the most important in recent years.” The alleged crime boss, known as Don Diego, was seized after a long manhunt that ended when police raided his farmhouse hide-out and found him cowering in a ditch. Colombia has extradited hundreds of drug suspects, but cocaine exports from the country are said to continue at about 600 tonnes a year.
