Routine passport controls have become a thing of the past for most travellers entering Switzerland by land.
The Alpine nation has become the 25th country to scrap such checks as part of the Schengen club of European states. Switzerland may be in the Schengen area but it is not in the European Union or its customs zone. Border guards will continue to make spot customs checks in which some travellers could be required to present ID. As for travellers to Switzerland with passports from outside the Schengen area, they will require a visa enabling entry to all the zone’s member states.
