Former Cypriot President Papadopoulos dies

Tassos Papadopoulos, the former President of Cyprus, has died at the age of 74.

The veteran politician, a heavy smoker, had been suffering from lung cancer. Admitted to hospital last month, his condition rapidly deteriorated. Considered a hardliner by some, Papadopoulos came to power in 2003 with centre-left backing. A year later, he led Greek Cypriot rejection of a United Nations reunification plan for the divided Mediterranean island. Papadopoulos lost his bid for re-election in February this year to Demetris Christofias, a former ally.More about:
