The Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo is honouring one of the world ‘s leading peacemakers today. Martti Ahtisaari was the architect of a European Union-backed plan for Kosovo’s independence from Serbia. He also brokered peace between Indonesia and rebels in Ache province, to end 30 years of fighting.
He is on record as saying Afghanistan’s conflict cannot be solved militarily. He says his background may have helped to make him a peacemaker. Ahtisaari is the first European in a decade to win the peace broker prize which is seen this year as a swing back to the core values of the prize in peacemaking.
