Eulex mission begins in Kosovo

The European Union’s policing mission in Kosovo has begun today but the officers may be hard pressed to win the confidence of both Albanians and minority Serbs. The deployment was delayed amid opposition from Serbia and Kosovo Serbs who see it as a tacit approval of Kosovo’s independence. Serbia’s consent was only won by letting Eulex officers remain under UN control in certain areas. The authorities in Pristina criticised the backpedalling.
