It is feared up to 100 people may be trapped or taken hostage inside a luxury Indian hotel following an attack by Islamic militants.

The latest pictures from Mumbai’s Trident-Oberoi hotel show flames lashing its upper floors.

Inside elite commandos are said to be battling armed gunmen room by room, according to guests who have managed to escape.

Explosions have rocked the nearby Taj Hotel, a 105-year-old city landmark on the waterfront, as the troops tried to flush out the militants there.

More than 100 people, including six foreigners, have reportedly been killed and many more injured following shootings at other popular tourist spots and a hospital in India’s movie capital.

A previously unknown group calling itself the Deccan mujahideen has contacted the Indian media to say it is leading the attack.
