With hostage-taking and continued sporadic fighting, Mumbai has been transformed from a tourist trap to a combat zone. Americans and some Europeans may have been the target of the violence but it is still unclear how many have fallen victim to it. A delegation of EU politicians was among those caught up in the turmoil.
“We are very shocked and we are also very concerned at what is happening to our citizens,” said a senior EU representative in India. “It happened in Mumbai that we had our delegation of 20 people also from the European parliament. This is why I came from Delhi. I was all the night with them on the phone to make sure they are all safe.”
Amid the confusion many countries are trying to establish the condition and whereabouts of their nationals.
Many tourists who were not directly affected by the attack are now trying to make their way home.
Mumbai has suffered several major bombings in the past, but never a terror attack so obviously targeting foreigners.
