Aubry calls for Socialist unity

Martine Aubry has appealed for unity among French Socialists, after her narrow party leadership victory.
Results show she triumphed by just 42 votes out of more than 130,000 cast.

“I understand Segolene Royal’s disappointment, and that of all of you who voted for her and supported her,“Aubry said. “That disappointment is even worse perhaps, because of the tiny majority. But I say to you simply, the question is no longer who lost or who won. We will all have lost if we cannot come together quickly.”

Aubry’s supporters celebrated long into the night at Socialist Party headquarters in Paris. They consider Royal a lightweight, and had threatened to launch a rival left-wing party if she had won.
