Defeated US presidential candidate John McCain has given his first post-election TV interview.
The 72-year-old seemed in good humour when he appeared on a late-night talk show.
He said: “I’m sleeping like a baby. I sleep two hours, wake up and cry …”
McCain defended his running mate, Sarah Palin, who has come in for mounting criticism that she was a drag on the Republican ticket.
McCain said: “She inspired people. She still does. I couldn’t be happier with Sarah Palin, and she’s gone back to be a great governor, and I think she will play a big role in the future of this country.”
Palin has hit back at unnamed campaign sources who claim that she thought Africa was a country and could not name the nations in the North American Free Trade Agreement.
She says the criticism is part of a smear campaign by sources she slams as “jerks”.
