A shipment of nuclear waste has finally arrived at is destination near a storage facility in Germany, despite mass protests by environmental campaigners.
The train’s annual journey from a nuclear treatment plant in western France to the site has been the target of large demonstrations in recent years and this year was no different. Anti-nuclear campaigners staged protests all along the route, causing the delivery to be delayed by around 12 hours.
In the end, police used force in one of Germany’s biggest security operations as the toxic freight was transferred to lorries for the last part of its journey.
About 1,000 activitists had blocked the road. Some chained themselves to concrete slabs, barricading the route.
