Nkunda plans DR Congo takeover

world news

| |

There is fresh concern that fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo will spread into neighbouring countries. It follows the Congolese rebel leader’s threat to take over the whole of the country.

General Laurent Nkunda’s Tutsi guerrilla’s have so far been engaged in fighting with government troops in and around North Kivu which borders Rwanda and Uganda. But the General now says the only way to end the conflict and free the Congolese people will be for his forces to march on the capital, Kinshasa.

Meanwhile, concern is growing for the quarter of the million people displaced by the violence. The United Nations says it is struggling to deliver aid to thousands trapped in camps too dangerous to reach because of the fighting, sparking fears of a new humanitarian crisis.
