Iran has reacted angrily to comments from the US President-elect. Iran’s parliamentary speaker Ali Larijani said the US is “walking the same wrong path as before.” This after Barack Obama said “Iran’s development of a nuclear weapon is unacceptable,” despite Iranian denials that its nuclear programme is designed for military purposes.
Larijani says if the US wants to “change its standing in the region, it should send out good signals.”
Obama was asked about Iran at his first news conference as president-elect. He said: “Iran’s development of a nuclear weapon, I believe, is unacceptable, and we have to mount an international effort to prevent that from happening. Iran’s support of terrorist organisations, I think, is something that has to cease.”
However, Obama said policies on Iran had to be thought through, and the US approach should not be in “a knee-jerk fashion.”
