The Democrats have retained control of the US House of Representatives.

The party currently controls the House by 235 seats to 199, and will retain that majority in the new Congress that convenes in January, having won more than 218 seats in the election so far.

Observers say it should boost the party’s chances for passing bills, including those to stimulate the economy and set timetables for troop withdrawals for Iraq.

Its predicted the Democrats will also expand their presence in the Senate.
