German police have confirmed that 20 people have died when a bus burst into flames while travelling on a motor way.

The incident happened near the northern city of Hanover.

While twelve people managed to escape the burning bus, the dead who were mostly elderly are thought to have been trapped inside.

Accident investigators looking into the cause of the blaze suspect it may have started by someone smoking in the toilet.
The driver is said to have pulled over but the fire caught hold immediately.

Fire fighters have said this is one of Germany’s worst accidents in the last 15 years.
