The Israeli cabinet has promised to stop the funding of illegal Jewish settlements in the West Bank after an upsurge of violence. In Hebron, Jewish settlers burned the Palestinian flag after Palestinians marched to the old city to protest that they were being denied access. It is a measure of the ongoing friction between the two sides.
According to an official report published in 2005, the Israelis have continued to channel funds to the unauthorised settlements.
But now, Israel’s caretaker Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has told the weekly cabinet meeting: “This law-breaking is often accompanied by violence towards security forces, injuring soldiers and policemen. It’s intolerable and we won’t accept it.”
In Hebron, Palestinians claim they are subjected to daily hostility from Israeli settlers when they try to reach the old-city. The situation is made worse by the fact that it is the site of the Ibrahim Mosque. They released balloons in the colours of the Palestinian flag.
